Publisher’s Note – January 2025

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

As I look back on the remarkable year of our 125th anniversary, I am filled with gratitude and pride for the milestones we’ve reached, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the countless individuals who have contributed to our success. This year of celebration has been a reflection of the tradition, innovation, and people who have defined our past. From our beginnings as a political magazine to becoming a journal of note, every step of the way has been shaped by the passion and vision of the residents of Our Town.

Through our Quinquennial Series, we have been able to look back on fascinating moments in history — from our founding in 1899, and the founding of other Kansas City institutions, to chronicling the wonderful achievements of everyday people, and to becoming a cornerstone of our community along the way. As we step out from this significant milestone, we honor the legacy of those who helped build this foundation, and I express my deepest appreciation to our staff, readers, friends, advertisers, and subscribers who continue to support us.

But while we take a moment to savor the achievements of the past, our eyes are firmly set on the future. The next 125 years hold vast possibilities, shaped by the same principles that have guided us thus far: a commitment to excellence, innovation, and service while honoring our traditions. We are entering a new era – one more than likely to be defined by its technological advances. We are elated to debut a new website later this year and are excited about our upcoming digital media offerings, and hope that you, our loyal readers, will be as well.

As we look forward, we are excited about the opportunities to grow, to adapt, and to embrace the challenges ahead. While the world around us may be changing rapidly, we recognize the simple pleasure in sitting down to read a print magazine and the wonderfully tactile sensation of turning the pages and feeling the weight in your hands. It’s a wonderful feeling to find friends and relatives amongst our pages and to catch up with favorite non profits and the goings-on of Our Town.

Here’s to the next 125 years—may they be even more transformative, impactful, and inspiring than the ones that have brought us to this moment. Together, we will continue to build, innovate, and chronicle the future with the same passion and purpose that has defined our journey from the very beginning. Thank you for being a part of our story. The best is yet to come.
