Since we first started following and applauding Brandon Calloway and his organization, Kansas City G.I.F.T., he and his team have been boldly moving ahead with his vision of providing grants to local Black-owned businesses so that they can create commerce and jobs in the city’s east side.
Brandon asks for individuals and corporations and foundations to make donations to his organization, and he, in turn, accepts applications for businesses (mostly start-ups) to receive grants to help them become successful, income producing entities that also create jobs.
Recently featured in the G.I.F.T. newsletter are three recipients of grants. Working hard and serving their communities are:
- Casie Murff of The BeVel Barber Lounge provides cuts, shaves, and pampering for men, and cuts and styles for women using top-of-the-line products and techniques since 2021. In January of 2024, he received a $25,000 grant from G.I.F.T. to help him open a brick and mortar store, create four new jobs, and create a subscription model for client care. Visit thebevelkc.com for more information.

- Karen Ellis, of Karen’s Kakes received $25,000 in a grant from G.I.F.T. and she has created a wonderful dessert boutique, with clients all around the metro and 120 kake flavors to choose from, in addition to cookies, pretzels, and fruits all dressed up and delicious.
