The Stats Hotel: Early Activism in Kansas City
The site of The Stats Hotel was at 12th and Wyandotte, in the middle of downtown, and just across the street from the old convention center – now Barney Allis Plaza. Since October, 2016, there has been a bronze historic marker at the corner of 12th and Wyandotte in the Plaza, which recognizes Kansas City’s role in the history of Gay and Lesbian rights activism. Considered to be the first-ever official meeting of LGBT rights activists (before the term was coined), it predates the Stonewall Riots by three years.
